Romeo and Juliet in the era of galactic civilisations

Ron and Jelsa are like Romeo and Juliet, but instead of belonging to warring families, they come from antagonistic human civilisations in the galactic age. The basic question that divides the two civilisations is purely philosophical – related to immortality and the afterlife.  Ron’s civilisation, on  the planet Syrus, believes in the continuation of life after death in a heavenly order. Jelsa’s civilisation Oxydus by contrast fights death – striving for immortality. It has already managed to prolong human life enormously, but this is creating unexpected problems including many suicides, paradoxically committed out of fear for lives that have become too precious, as no one wishes to lose his or her life after centuries.

The story starts a hundred years before the fateful meeting of Ron and Jelsa. At this time a scientist of genius living on Oxydus, Alvarez,  creates a machine called the psycholab. Anyone getting into the machine can experience the quantum spiritual essence of consciousness and the whole cosmos. It is able to see these quanta from inside because at its core is a living human brain.
